Macular Degeneration

Protecting your eyesight

Two things you can do to protect your eyesight are to use special filters on your glasses and follow up regularly with your doctor. Your doctor may also recommend nutritional supplements. Since macular degeneration may progress quickly from the dry to wet type, regular follow-up is essential to allow for early laser treatment of any leakage. An Amsier grid allows you to test your sight daily.

Filter Out "Bad" Light
Ultraviolet (UV) light is high-energy, short-wavelength light from the sun. Increased exposure to UV light may increase your risk of macular degeneration. You can help protect your eyes by buying special sunglasses and by having your regular glasses coated to filter out UV light.

Follow up with Your Doctor
After diagnosis, you will have regular follow-up visits to monitor any progression. Your doctor may repeat eye exams you've had previously.

Test Your Sight Daily
Testing your sight with an Amsier grid is a simple, five-second check you can do daily. It reveals signs of macular degeneration, such as blurry areas, black spots, or wavy lines.

How to Use Your Amsier Grid

  • Post the Amsier grid in an easy-to-see place.
  • Stand about a foot away from the Amsier grid.
  • Wearing your glasses, cover or close one eye and focus on the black dot in the center.
  • Note any vision changes such as black spots or wavy lines.
  • Repeat the above steps with the other eye.
  • Call your doctor promptly if you notice any changes.
